Tips for Matching Stockings with Outfits

Dress for Special Events

If you are wearing a cocktail dress, then you should match it with nylon stockings that are very smooth and silky. They can be in a color that matches the dress or a natural color. If they are a natural color make sure they match your skin color and are not too dark or too light. If they are a color that matches the dress, make sure they accentuate the dress. They should not be “louder” then your nice dress. Care must be taken to ensure it blends in with the shoes.  Wear a garter belt that also matches the cocktail dress.

Black nylon stockings go well with the “little black dress” but you can also wear natural stockings. Also wear a black garter belt and black slip.  If your dress is sequined or beaded, wear nice silky shiny stocking nylons to match the beads or sequins or the dress fabric, which ever accentuates you and blends in well with the entire outfit including the shoes.

If you are going to work it depends on where you are working. There will usually be a type of dress wear for work that you will notice most people wearing, so you will want to blend in and not stand out as being over-dressed or underdressed. If others are wearing bright colors with matching nylons than you can too, but if the dress is more conservative you will want to tone down also.

Business Clothes

With tailored suits you can certainly color coordinate your nylons to match your clothes. Navy blue nylons look great with navy blue suits. A pinkish or reddish nylon goes great with the red suit. White nylons go great with the white suit.

You may also wish to coordinate your nylons to match a blouse and scarf with the skirt and jacket being a different color and this can also look great.  Important for you to get the right size. Stockings are sized by height and weight. If you get stockings or pantyhose that are too large they will be loose. If they are too small, especially pantyhose, they will not only look terrible but also feel terrible. Especially for an event such as a wedding, going to the opera, or going out on a spectacular date, you sure will want to feel comfortably dressed.

If you are planning a very special event, it is a good idea to purchase your nylons ahead of time and try them on first to see how they fit. If they fit really well, go buy a few extra pair in case of a last minute runner, or any other sort of accident or unforeseen circumstance such as getting caught in a rain shower or falling. If they didn’t fit well you may need to try a different size.
