I worked for nearly a decade in a women’s clothing shop. Mostly, we didn’t care who you bought the garments for. We just wanted customers to treat us politely and not make too much of a mess.
You might run into a clerk who gives you the stinkeye, but such a clerk is being unprofessional. A sale is a sale.
I had several transvestite customers who were my regulars. If I saw something come in that I thought they’d like, I’d call them up and let them know. They thought I was wonderful, I got a good sale (I could usually show them several other items that they liked) and everyone was happy.
If you DO want to buy stuff for your girlfriend, make sure you know her size and preferred styles. For instance, I look dreadful in black and yellow, so I won’t buy any garments that are black or yellow. My husband thinks that lacy black undies are very sexy, and he bought me a couple of pair, but after I modeled them for him, he’s agreed that I look much, much better in lacy red or pink underthings, which he likes nearly as much. And if you actually want the garments to wear yourself, go ahead and tell the clerk that you want them for yourself. If she’s been a clerk for any length of time at all, then she’s already waited on a man who wants to wear frilly things, and isn’t shocked. She might also be able to suggest new styles for you. Really, she probably won’t care who you want the stuff for, as long as you’re polite. If she DOES care, then she’s in the wrong business, because while men who like to wear the frilly things are not in the majority, there’s enough of them that it’s profitable to be accommodating to them.
