Lingerie goes hand-in-hand with spring weather because of the increase of new couples, weddings, and warmer weather. In recessions, dating sites such as eHarmony.com and Chemistry.com offer discounts on their services, which leads to a higher revenue of people, and in turn, an increase in new romances. During the “honeymoon” stage of dating, the first 6 months, women are more apt to buying lingerie to impress and excite.
Likewise, the purchase of lingerie during a recession is less likely to leave the buyer feeling guilty than say, buying an expensive new car. Lingerie boosts self-esteem in many women, and brings a quick feeling of comfort, especially when other purchases seem tough to justify.
Lingerie brings quick comfort, particularly during “therapy shopping” (shopping as a distraction, purchasing material possessions to bring comfort). Women wear lingerie to feel sexy, to impress, and to enhance their body image. Depression can be rampant when the economy is bleak, and lingerie, along with make-up and new clothing, is a quick self esteem boost.
Businesses, of course, during recessions offer more sales and discounts in order to keep buyers interested. Victoria’s Secret extended their semi-annual sale in 2009 in favour of their hard-on-cash shoppers. Though the decline of the economy can feel depressing, lingerie is a quick spirit booster, and reasonable enough to purchase.Confidence and beauty comes from inside, but there’s no reason the outside can’t show it too.
